With over three thousand hot spring baths (onsens) in the country, the Japanese way of living is steeped in the culture of bathing. Bathing in an onsen or in a sento (a communal bath) is viewed as a way of purifying the body and soul. Traditionally you would sit on a stool to wash and rinse off the body just before entering the bath.

They’re similarly popular in Nordic countries.

Our handcrafted stool is made in Japan from traditional Japanese hinoki wood: revered for its natural antibacterial properties, citrus scent and strong resistance to humidity and mould. Hinoki is characterised by a lustrous white body and straight grain, with a life-span of more than a thousand years. It’s also light and water resistant, making it ideal for use in the bathroom or sauna.

We’ve selected a stool with a classic and sleek design and a smooth and lustrous finish.

This hinoki stool can also be used as a bench or mini table to display your towels, soap and cosmetics in the bathroom.

Measures approx. 26cm wide and 24cm tall. Hinoki wood products are uncoated to bring out their best features, and there will be variations in grain and sap. It has a high natural oil content and sometimes oil markings will be visible in the grain. While hinoki is naturally resistant to water and mould, to keep it at its best we recommend wiping the stool with a dry cloth after each use. Leave to dry in a well-ventilated area. If treated correctly, hinoki wood products can last a very long time.
