Magewappa Sugi Serving Tray
£95
A striking tray hand crafted in Kakunodate, a former samurai town in today’s Akita Prefecture, famous for its samurai traditions and hundreds of weeping cherry trees.
It’s a stunning example of kabazaiku (樺細工), the traditional Japanese art of fashioning woodworks out of the bark of a cherry tree, which began as a secondary vocation for samurai in the town over 200 years ago. These skills and techniques have been passed on artisan to artisan through the generations.
The tray is crafted from cedar wood, shaped through a traditional steam-bending method known as magewappa. It’s contrasted with a thin polished band of ‘migaki-dashi’ cherry wood bark.
Suitable for serving food and drinks to guests, or as a sweet or fruit platter.
Comes gift boxed.
Measures approx. 41cm wide. Wipe clean with a soft wet or dry cloth and dry thoroughly.
Presented wrapped in a gift box and tissue paper.
