Holy Night by Issei Suda

£40

The enigmatic Japanese photographer Issei Suda was famous for capturing the theatre of the everyday, the ordinary and the banal. Drab street scenes transformed into something otherworldly, at a time when Japan was in the throes of hyper-urbanisation.

Never formally associated with any photographic school, Suda’s photography is known for reflecting on Japanese customs and traditions with a questioning eye.

‘Holy Night’ features photographs taken by Suda on Christmas Eve 1991 in Tokyo.

Salary men head home laden with shopping, young lovers part ways, dogs hang from car windows.

“I wonder how many Japanese people actually think of Jesus Christ on Christmas. We just observe Christmas Eve by buying cake and bringing it home to eat; lovers spend it together as the most romantic night of the year. These kinds of customs have become the norm.”
