These tactile cotton coasters have been made in Japan using the technique of sashiki-ori. It’s a process which emerged in Japan in the mid 20th Century: sashiko or decorative stitching, originally intended to reinforce points of wear and tear and give garments a longer life.

A sashiko-ori loom can make more complicated patterns than sashiko sewn by hand. This sashiko fabric has been embroidered on a traditional loom by renowned studio Miwa Orimono; they're the only company in Japan to have kept this special jacquard machine from the 1940s. These machines are so intricate, they stitch only one meter of sashiko fabric per hour.

Each coaster features traditional sashiko patterns- waves, mountains, bamboo, persimmon flower- interpreted in a contemporary way for a modern home.

Every coaster will be one-of-a-kind and feature its own unique woven stitched pattern.

100% cotton. Measures approx. 11 x 11cm. As each piece is unique the stitching pattern may vary from that in the image.
